In my day job, I work all day convincing private landowners to maintain or restore habitat for ETs, some ugly (Massasauga's, Indiana bats, etc), some more charismatic like Karner Blue butterflies. The Massasauga is only listed as special concern in Michigan, but is a federal candidate for listing as threatened. Interesting fact: Massasaugas sometimes share their hibernation burrows with other species of snakes and even some brave frogs.

If you take requests, one of my favorite Midwest EUTs is the federally threatened copperbelly watersnake, a snake for whom roads are a real problem.Pcruciferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07548843525798905117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32642929.post-91404368113570560382007-12-31T16:26:00.000-05:002007-12-31T16:26:00.000-05:00When I was a graduate student at the Royal Ontario...When I was a graduate student at the Royal Ontario Museum, a dead Massasauga was delivered to us in a styrofoam cooler. It had been thoroughly bludgeoned, and a tag was attached that said, "Killed by Tourists," which instantly became the name of our short-lived rock band.

Very interesting blog, by the way.Hugh Griffithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10009591922841705072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32642929.post-22997283923452836942007-12-28T20:02:00.000-05:002007-12-28T20:02:00.000-05:00We had one of these at a nature center I used to w...We had one of these at a nature center I used to work at and they are just fantastically designed creatures. they have this keeling along their scales that makes them look like mini dragons.

On a side note, I remember running across some data (which, of course, I can't locate now...)that said that that those most often bitten by snakes were males aged 14-21 and the injury site was most often on the hand. ;-)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
